Herpes Simplex Virus - Is it Possible That I Have It?

By Maggie Turner

"I don't have herpes, I only get cold sores or fever blisters!" This common misconception may be a primary reason this dreaded disease is spreading at such alarming rates, worldwide.

The cold sores or fever blisters you suffer from are caused by a strain of the Herpes Simplex Virus I. Despite its technical name, there is nothing simple about treating the herpes virus. Herpes knows no age limits, nor racial, religious or social boundaries. The herpes virus can be easily transmitted by a kiss, or by contaminated objects such as toothbrushes, utensils, cups and wash cloths.

The best defense against cold sores begins with understanding this complex disease. Cold sores can be painful, annoying and embarrassing. While they are not dangerous in themselves, they can be spread around to other skin sites and to other people.

Other strains of the herpes virus are much more serious. The herpes virus that infects and transmits from the genital areas is known as Herpes Simplex Virus II. A recent study found in the New England Journal of Medicine reports that one in five Americans is infected with genital herpes, a painful and disheartening disease which greatly impairs relationships.

The Herpes Zoster Virus, better known as shingles, is caused by an outbreak of the latent chicken pox virus (varicella). This virus resides in sensory nerves along the spinal column until it becomes active. Severe pain occurs and ulcerated sores appear on the skin. Though the shingles sores may heal in two to three weeks, some patients experience crippling pain that can last for years.

Other diseases of the herpes group include chicken pox and mononucleosis. And recently, strains of the herpes virus have been implicated in such diseases as kaposi's sarcoma, multiple sclerosis and cervical cancer. This clever parasite has evolved to evade the body's complex immune system, thus ensuring its survival.

Even the best medical treatments have failed to rid human-kind of the herpes virus. Other anti-viral treatments may lead to resistant and perhaps more perilous strains of the virus. As you can see, this virus represents a serious challenge to the medical community and a health concern to the public at large.

Fortunately, when it comes to breakouts, Medavir, a pharmaceutical grade over-the-counter product, is meeting that challenge. Medavir was developed by scientists and tested by a team of physicians and scientists from America's top pharmaceutical companies. Medavir is not an herbal or dietary supplement often found on the internet falsely claiming to cure the herpes virus.
